South Texas Railroad Prototype Modelers

FREEMO is the latest concept in modular model railroading. It was intended to make modular railroading more interactive and not just trains running around in a circular fashion on a double or triple track mainline.
FREEMO is like a permanent or sectional layout but retains its modularity. FREEMO layouts are single track mainline, with sidings, for point-to-point, point to loop, or loop-to-loop configuration. The layout can be various sizes and designs. The mainline is centered on a 2-foot (or wider) end so either end of module can be connected to adjacent module without changing wiring or track. FREEMO mainline uses the stronger code 83 track.
FREEMO stresses track flexibility and scenery, requiring only that the tracks on ends of the module join with others. The size and configuration of the module are left up to the modeler. This enables the modeler to use their creativity and not be confined to a set 2 x 4, 6, or 8 foot area.
The following are the specifics on STRPM:
Our modules are 50 inches tall at the railhead. The operating system is "Digitrax" Digital Command and Control (DCC).
Operations, have not yet begun, but will be conducted per the way the Southern Pacific railroad did in the 1990’s. Freight movement will be conducted as prototypically as possible. Mainlines, sidings, and industrial spurs are modeled to look as realistic as possible. Our signaling will also follow suite with the SP from types of signals to the proper usage. A computer dispatch center will be set up to operate the railroad similar to the way the railroads today operate.
For compatibility, one of our return loops drops down to the NMRA height standards so that a NMRA module or a NMRA modules group can tie into our layout. This is done so that if we are going to be set up at a convention and the occasion arises we could link up with another modular group.
In all, we are a group of model railroaders who wanted to run and operate trains in a realistic manner. We are what you could call a non-club. We operate on a consensus of members without officers or dues. We believe that to make the most fun for all members it is best to keep politics out. This provides for a more relaxed atmosphere, but there are guidelines for proper conduct that will be followed for everyone’s benefit.
We are currently located downstairs from Hobby Lobby and Burlington Coat Factory in the Wonderland of the Americas Mall (formerly Crossroads Mall). Hours of operations are every Friday 5-8pm, Saturday 10am – 6pm, Sunday 12 - 6pm. Come by and see us!
